I didn't have much anticipation for this film and I though this was a routine chick flick. However, Will Smith shows that he can take any acting role given to him and make it work. He's become a veteran entertainer. This film surprised me. Kevin James (King of Queens) is hilarious as the accountant, trying to win the heart of his boss. Eva Mendes is a lovely presence on the screen as the gossip columnist who uncovers Hitch's secret. The story is wonderful, original and doesn't take itself too seriously. It's a refreshing change of pace and will entertain all who watch.

The film follows the artist formally known as the Fresh Prince (sadly D.J. Jazzy Jeff is nowhere to be found) around as the mystical Date Doctor as he helps the hapless men of New York land the girl of their dreams because as Hitch says, "Any guy can sweep any girl off her feet, he just needs the right broom."
His latest client also stands to be his biggest triumph as a goofy account Albert, played by Kevin James hires Hitch to help catch the eye of the socialite, Allegra Cole, who is a client at his firm. But with about ten other accountants on her case, it's hard for Albert to stick out. Granted whenever Allegra's name was brought up I couldn't help wondering how much the filmmakers were getting paid from pharmaceutical industry.
But Hitch's greatest success could be in trouble when he meets a jaded woman that he tries to woo who just so happens to have a gossip column that regularly focuses on Allegra's dating life. But since this is a romantic comedy, hilarity ensues instead, or at least tries too. The movie tries a little too hard at the physical which is fine when James is on screen, but when it's left up to the Fresh Prince and Eva Mendez as the gossip maven, it sometimes fall flat.
Overall it was a decent movie with a couple good laughs even though most of the movie, much like every romantic comedy, was extremely predictable. There were also a few scenes that didn't really need to be in the movie like Hitch's flashback to his dorkier college days or the scene with movie killer Michael Rapaport. As for the extras on the DVD, there were a couple of run of the mil featurettes and boring deleted scenes that were rightfully left on the cutting room floor along with your typical gag reel. Also there was a video for 2005's summer anthem, Amerie's 1 Thing.

Admittedly, I am not a big fan of "romantic comedies" but this was one of the better ones I've seen. I liked this much better than, for example, "Monster In Law" which had two big names in it in the form of Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda.
Anyway, Will Smith does an excellent job as Hitch, a man dedicated to helping good but clueless men get the woman of their dreams. Along the way, he falls in love with a gossip columnist named Sara (Eva Mendes) who discovers who he is and exposes him.
Will definitely takes this role as his own while Eva Mendes does keep up with him quite nicely as her character has issues of her own that she deals with during the film. The dude from "King Of Queens" is a show stealer as he makes jokes that would've been just funny or not funny at all freakin' hilarious!
I agree with the some of the previous reviewers about the content of the film. Though rated PG-13, you could actually almost leave your kids to watch this film as the sexual innuendos are almost non-existent and the bad language only pops up in a handful of scenes. Its almost suitable for families to watch. Make no mistake though, it is hilarious! Worth the price of buying.

Will Smith did a good job in his first romantic comedy, showing the screen presence that the viewers were expecting. He was definatly right for the part and had the feel for the character. I liked the way Eva Medes took her character and interacted with Will Smith. Kevin James makes an impressive first outing with movies, he is hilarious in the movie, and actually takes the joke and makes it funnier than it is. somehow, I felt the script was weak, I felt that some moments were forced, and some of the Humor was so fast that you didn't have time to think about the joke. Will Smith at times was a little too confident in his role, I think he felt that he WAS the character, when I think that he could've taken situations and used his humor to make it funnier.
The movie wasn't a masterpiece but it is WAY better than some movies that have been released that call themselves "Romantic Comedies". Andy Tennant, Director, did a good job but.... could've gotten better performances by cast. The writers in the other hand needed to write something original, and instead of the clichés'. There are definitely some silly scenes, which some aren't quite realistic, but the other are so true to life that it hits you square in the eyes. the things I appreciated the most about Hitch is that it is free of the overt sexual innuendos that are so common and accepted in most romantic comedies... it could almost be rated PG.
To sum it up it's a movie about a guy who helps guys get the girl of their dreams to fall in love. "Hitch" is great for (almost) all ages (due to little language) but it is worth having.

This film was totally entertaining to me. I love Will Smith and think he did a great job. So many people I know wanted to hate the film but ended up loving it.
