Charming as ever, Will Smith carries this film through many pitfalls to come out shining like a new penny (as usual). Supporting performances are more than disappointing, but Will Smith's squeaky-clean portrayal of a dating expert working to help men get to know women who would never give them a second glance intrigues and holds the viewer's interest through the entire film. The plot is one we've seen innumerable times before - man thinks he doesn't need woman, woman thinks the same, man and woman meet and begin to change their minds, woman finds out detail about man she doesn't like, man and woman break up, man and woman reunite after woman decides detail wasn't so bad after all. Still, Hitch ends leaving the viewer feeling amused and not too much stupider (see?) for having watched the movie.

I really enjoyed Hitch. Smith continues to prove that her really is a big screen actor. He is charming, relaxed and easygoing in that real-person kind of way. The best thing about this is that it doesn't rely on a lot of over-the-top romantic contrivances: playing two characters, constantly missing each other, getting too ditzy and silly : all big pluses. The Kevin James plotline has the silliest bits, but even they are not over the top. There is a genuinely sweet sincerity in this film, that really makes it work. Eva Mendes is lovely and more serious than most of the girls chased in these films, Amber Valleta proves that she can actually deliver dialogue without being laughed at and James is the comically sweet loser/everyman. Actually very well done. One kind of comic nod to the old romatic comedies is a remote control Smith has in his apartment ala Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk - but it is quick and not an extended silly joke. Definitely worth your time.

HITCH [2005]
"Hitch" is a romantic comedy about Alex "Hitch" Hitchens [Will Smith], a "date doctor" that is trying to get hopeless romantic Albert [Kevin James] the woman of his dreams, Allegra Coles. But Hitch himself has fallen in love with Sara [Eva Mendes]! Oh no!
The movie is constantly switching between Hitch's relationship and Albert's relationship, which is a big disappointment. Why? Because all of Kevin James' scenes are great and funny, while Will Smith's scenes are very boring. Smith and James play their parts almost perfectly, but I guess James just got better lines.
I mean, take a look at the "Hitch" commercials they played in 2005. Almost all the scenes they played was from Kevin James. BECAUSE HE STEALS THE SHOW! When James is in the dancing scene, it's hilarious. When Smith is teaching James how to kiss, it's hilarious. But when Smith is throwing a salad or whatever at Eva Mandez, it's not...
The movie seems to drag on and on and on. It is about 2 hours long and about half of it is worthless crap that I didn't care about. Shoulda cut it down to an hour and a half and only had a half hour of Hitch's relationship!
For the laughs you do get, I woulda gave Hitch 4.5 out of 5 or something like that. But the boring parts just make it a little... well... boring! The only standout Will Smith scene is the "speed dating" scene, and that doesn't save the movie.
*** out of *****
Pros: Kevin James, "speed dating" scene
Cons: just about everything else

Will Smith stars in this funny film about dating and falling in love. Smith stars as Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, the "Date Doctor". He helps men find dates. He has been rather successful at his work, as evidenced by the pictures of couples he helped get together hanging on his wall. Hitch may have finally met his greatest challenge in Albert Brennaman (Kevin James). Albert is a junior financial offecer who handles the account of heiress Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta). Albert is desperate to have a relationship with Allegra, so he goes to Hitch for help.
Hitch is skeptical at first, but he decides to try to help him. This is the beginning of a friendship between Hitch and Albert. Soon, Albert is going to fancy art galleries and New York Knicks games with Allegra. Meanwhile, Hitch has found a woman that he likes. Her name is Sara Melas (Eva Mendes). She works as a newspaper gossip columnist. Hitch is immediately attracted to her, and the two begin dating. In the meantime, Sara has seen the photos of Allegra and Albert that have been appearing in the papers. Intrigued, Sara decides to do some investigationg of her own to find out why a socialite would be dating a junior accountant.
What she finds out doesn't bode well for Hitch. She finds out that he is indeed the infamous "Date Doctor". Feeling hurt and betrayed, she breaks up with Hitch. But is this really the end for them? What will happen with Sara and Hitch and Allegra and Albert?
This is one of the funniest movies I've seen in quite a while. Will Smith was the perfect choice for the role of Hitch. His funny disposition really makes the character shine. Kevin James does an equally outstanding job as the bumbling but lovable Albert. You can't help but root for him to get the seemingly unattainable "trophy girl". Eva Mendes and Amber Valletta are also very good as Sara and Allegra.
I recommend this movie very highly. I'm a fan of Will Smith's music and movies, and he delivers perhaps his finest performance in this movie. This is the perfect "date" movie, so if you're looking for something fun to do on date night, put this movie in, relax, and see a really great romantic comedy.

I really only saw 3 movies that were made in 2005 and all 3 were very good I thought. The others I watched were the 40 Year Old Virgin and also The Wedding Crashers. I liked this movie because Will Smith did a very good job against. He plays a dude who was once a huge looser and then becomes Mr. Hip and gives men tips on how to pick up women as relationships and not just sex.He goes to talk to a guy Kevin James who wants a women who is a smart heiress that is a tributary for the company that he works for. He is a really big dork and Will gets him hooked up. Meanwhile Will falls for a girl that is a newspaper worker. He is not Mr.Smooth he fails on a date with her at Ellis Island and also at a cookout. She finds out that he sets up men with women and thinks it is just about sex but it is not that at all.
So Will gets her back by being a huge moron instead of smooth.
