As a huge fan of Star Wars, I was disappointed with the acting in this movie. In the first three movies ever made the cast had character, memorable character, and this movie doesn't have the same flair. However, the story had to be told. The highlights in this movie are the light saber duels, Darth Maul, the pod racing, and Obi-Wan-Kenobi.
You must watch it if you want to find out the origin of Darth Vader.
If you are a Star Wars fan buy it and be a judge for yourself. You will be entertained.

Okay , to start off, I'm neither a Star wars nut nor a Star wars hater. I kind of *like* Star Wars, but that's about the extent of my fandom. But this film and Attack of The Clones (haven't seen Revenge Of The Sith yet) simply aren't made from the same mold as the original trilogy. The original Star Wars was more than movie- it was a cultural event in 1977. It spawned a new phase of space themed movies (Battlestar Galctica and Flash Gordon among them) Even James Bond took the cue from Star Wars. It was a near perfect mix of great visuals, interesting but clear plot and likeable characters.
But The Phantom Menace has little in common with the original movie. The naysayers to this movie are right I'm afraid. No memorable characters or dialog, bland and/ or annoying acting, and a terrible plot. After seeing this movie 3 times I still don't really understand what it was about. A trade sanction on Taboo.. a blockade...Sensator Palpatine doing something "cleverly" political...Um, okay, riveting stuff there George.
But for all that there are some positive things here, unfortunately purely visual! The pod race, although overly long and probably originally conceived as the basis for a computer game is still enjoyable to watch. The CGI is clearly there as eye candy, not much more, but is usually enjoyable to watch nonetheless. It's 1999 CGI of course, but it hasn't dated too badly IMO. (heck even Jurassic Park still holds up well today!) And for some reason the colours in The Phantom Menace look good. Whoever designed the visuals knew how to use colors in a pleasing way.
In short this movie falls far short of the sense of adventure that the original trilogy had and instead relies too much on visuals.
