Editorial Review:

Album Description:
Building upon the foundation that AILD has laid over the past several years, growing from a small San Diego outfit slowly and deliberately into a priority national act, the band has become Metal Blade Records’ biggest sellers with an extremely devoted following. AS I LAY DYING has the goods to take it all the way and stake their claim as the metal band you need to know about in 2007 and beyond.

Amazon.com:
It didn't take long for the once exciting sounds of metalcore to devolve into metalsnore but, thankfully, a few bands have lead the charge toward keeping the (sub)genre's lifeblood flowing with enthusiasm and even ingenuity. Among them? As I Lay Dying. The San Diego-based outfit returns with the kind of killer guitar hooks (courtesy of Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa), dynamic vocals, and a drum and bass attack that creates an aftershock bound to be felt for the remainder of the decade and long into the next. The radio-friendly title cut stands as an exemplar of the unit's true strengths, while "Comfort Betrays" and "Within Destruction" are pure metal mayhem that will inspire the listener to wield a healthy sense of righteous indignation. Among the other fascinating cuts are "Forsaken," "I Never Wanted," and the soaring "The Sound of Truth." The band may try a little too hard during moments of "Wrath Upon Ourselves" and "This is Who We Are," but on the whole, An Ocean Between Us proves that As I Lay Dying is an unstoppable force worthy of sustained attention and capable of transforming and transcending the musical parameters in which it was born. --Jedd Beaudoin

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - It grew up on me
At the beginning I only liked "Forseken", then I kept listening and I realized that I completely love "Nothing Left" especially the way it comes right after "Separation". The guitar at the end of "Separation" is amazing and "I Never Wanted" is, without a doubt, a masterpiece... Best album I bought in the last year or so.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Is it me or are the Christian bands putting out the best music.
I could care less if a band is Christain or Satanic. I am just a massive fan of music. Yet it seems like you can not go wrong with buying most Christain bands CD's.
If you like Shadows Fall..All that Remains...I would recommend this.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - As I Lay Dying . . . . metalcore's best . . . . but . . . .
The music on this album is fantastic. In my review on As Blood Runs Black I said: "Some artists are such amazing musicians that they can screw originality and they can play other people's original ideas twice as well as the original artist. This is what As Blood Runs Blacks does for the first 4 songs." This is basically what As I Lay does, except for the entire frickin' album! There isn't a song on the entire album that I don't like. I felt the same thing about August Burns Red. Both albums are amazing at keeping my interest for the entire album. Their lyrics are also very good. So, with all the praise i have given As I Lay Dying, what is wrong with this album?? My problem is that you can not figure out what in the world Tim Lambesis is saying. What the vocalists say is very important to me, and it frustrates me i can only understand the singer. The cool thing about August Burns Red is you can understand most of lyrics, and even if you can't there is no way you can't understand what he's screaming during breakdowns, which happens probably two times a song.

So, it's an excellent album. Music good. Musicianship good. Percussionist good. It all adds up to 10/10 music. But the screamer kind of dropped my opinion of the album to 4 stars out of 5 stars. Lambesis does have a good scream and excellent tone, but his enunciation is terrible, what he says means absolutely nothing to me because I can't understand what he is saying.

But, all in all, ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Pushing Closer to Metal, and further away from Metal-core
This album simply rocks!!! I am mostly into Metal, like Opeth, Nevermore, Shadows Fall, Wintersun, Amon Amarth, to name a few, but I bought this album after being somewhat disappointed with SAS. I was unsure whether it would be more of the same, or more Metal. It is definitely more Metal, with lots of thrash influences sticking out here, there, and everywhere. 6 guitar solos! And good ones at that. The lyrics are very uplifting, despite the aggressive nature of this music. I hope they continue this progression toward full-on metal. If you can, see them live, they kick!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - still awesome
I don't like this album much as the last two but is still a awesome heavy album. Many people don't like metalcore cause they simply just called it hardcore music and not metal at all but as i lay dying is a metalcore band that's not just "hardcore".This album is a more thrash metal album with death metal sounds but i don't like thrash but still okay,i mean this is not like atreyu or avenged sevenfold who went mainstream those bands were bands that you can call hardcore eventough a7x say they just play metal, but whatever as i lay dying is a band that you can call METAL!This album like i said is more thrash and way more clean vocals if you liked their first three albums yeah you might like this one just not as good and heavy like frail words collapse. This band has always had death metal sounds and still with this one,so i say give it a try it just makes me mad that many bands go more thrashy but let's see what we can expect for their next album.
