What a beautiful, sentimental journey it is for me to listen to this music again! My father was a WWII vet who loved and listened to swing and big band stuff from the early to mid 40s all day every day when I was growing up. Listening to this now brings his face clearly to memory for me, and I can see Dad in our old dining room working on a puzzle or at his desk doing a crossword puzzle. I can smell his pipe filled with Kentucky Club Mixture. I can smell food cooking in Mom's kitchen. Ahhh... this music is precious to me for that alone! All the tunes my Dad loved and that I was captive audience to then are on here, and guess what? I love them now too! Dad was right! (Again!)
I'm always a little nervous when ordering old music on a new medium - I'm sure we've all bought something on CD that we loved on LP years ago and been disappointed with the sound quality on the new medium. The sound quality on these discs is amazing, especially considering the age of the source material! I was pleasantly surprised, really surprised, at the excellent sound when I popped the first CD into my CD player.
Definitely, buy this CD. It's an excellent buy, and would be at twice the price. Don't get any ideas, Amazon >:^[

I purchased the WWII songs for my mom and dad who met and married during WWII....we played them at our family reunion...they loved them...and listened to them for hours. It brought back great memories.

I love the music from World War II. The songs are so easy to listen to and after listening I find myself humming them, so unlike the music of today. When I listen to it I find myself remembering stories my parents told of this period in time. (I guess I'm a baby boomer drop out when it comes to music.) The music reflects a generation who did what they had to do but still had time for fun. It is a bygone era.

After the Depression and well into the 1940s, songwriters stepped up to the plate and composed songs that boosted morale during those difficult times. This collection provides many of those wonderful tunes-whether love songs, patriotic songs or silly but fun novelty songs. I've played this 3 cd set for my mother and she sang along and reminisced about hearing these songs in her youth during WW2. I only have one small complaint and that is that I much prefer Dooley Wilson's version of As Time Goes By to Rudy Vallee's. One of the loveliest tunes ever composed, I have heard many versions by many artists and I'll always prefer Dooley Wilson's, perhaps because Casablanca is one of my favorite movies of all time. All in all a terrific compilation and a must have for anyone who is into collecting the music of the 1940s.

I'm too young to remember the songs. However, while I was growing up I was allowed to see the movies from that era. I loved the simplicity of the melodies and lyrics. It's a weird flash back to my childhood.
