Editorial Review:
Description: With their progressive metal style and exceptional musicianship (learned at the Berklee School of Music) Dream Theater grew to prominence with their MTV hit "Pull Me Under" in 1992. During that time Dream Theater developed a rabid fan base that remains with them today - especially when it comes to their mind-blowing live shows. This 2 DVD set, Images And Words: Live In Tokyo/5 Years In A LIVEtime, is a must-own for any Dream Theater fan. The 2-DVD set is jam-packed with over 3 hours of footage: live performances along with 6 music videos and memorable behind-the-scenes interviews.

This double DVD is awesome and you should absolutely pick it up. James is awesome across both disks. About 4/5. Also about 4/5 for the band. But the phenomenal 1995 tour is missing.
That said, what do you get? A format I love where documentary is spliced into the song material. The Tokyo show is excellent. I love the stage lighting on that tour. The gullible will love this show for all the things they think James doesn't do anymore.
Given that, Disk 2 is equally impressive, but takes cuts from several shows. A best of a few years packed into 2 hours. I love what's provided here, but ultimately, it's why I give this compilation 4/5 instead of 5/5 as well. I recognize there are time restrictions, and label personnel restrictions from this era, but I still feel that this DVD hides from 1995. And that year was absolutely phenomenal across the board. All those great moments from james firing several notes higher than the usual F# in January to the Limelight topping Mercy **** A Change of Seasons in December.
In place of this are some of the unplugged tracks from 1998. I love the tracks included. They are some of my favorites, but this 2nd disk needs that extra hour dealing with 1995-1996.
Hopefully Portnoy, having more freedom with the contract holders than he used to, and with the internet much wider in nature today, will give us a DVD of that era.

These two DVDs really show the progress of the band in the 90's, and are very enjoyable to watch. Great live performances with halarious home video footage in between. And both with commentary tracks from the band! Well worth the price.

I purchased this for my husband for his birthday. He is a Dream Theater fan and this lives up to their special talents to perform.

the absolute mastery of music is what prevails. these men are seriously good. ridiculously good. and we get to watch. yes, the music videos aren't my favorite...but they only have a few. the live music will make you watch this again, and again, and again

This is a good DVD. It contains lots of rare performances, music videos, and 3 hours of band commentary. The only problem is the sound quality, which is dreaful. Because of the EQ, John Petrucci sounds paper thin, Myung can barely be heard, and James sounds horrible (partly because he "screams" half the songs and partly because of the way it's mixed in). For fans who have a genuine appreciation of Dream Theater, this DVD is worth it. For mere casual fans or new fans who are just getting to know the band now, I'd recommend "Scenes From NY" or "Budokon" instead.
