Product Description: A new york architect turns vigilante hit man after thugs attack his wife and daughter. Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 08/22/2006 Starring: Charles Bronson William Redfield Run time: 93 minutes Rating: R Director: Michael Winner
Amazon.com: This controversial, 1974 drama exploits urban paranoia and presents vigilantism as cathartic release. But it is also a captivating, Everyman-ish story of a New Yorker who goes through a sea change after crime depletes his family, and who runs afoul of the law while taking it into his own hands. Charles Bronson stars as the vengeance-seeking urban warrior who goes on a punk-killing spree after his wife and daughter are attacked by intruders. Director Michael Winner (The Wicked Lady) shamelessly builds upon audience identification with Bronson's rage, but he also makes an interesting story out of the latter's tug-of-war with disapproving police. It's an unpleasant film all around, but not nearly as bad as its horrifying, numerous sequels. Watch for a very young Jeff Goldblum--in this, his second movie--as one of the assailants of Bronson's loved ones. --Tom Keogh

The Bottom Line:
A dated revenge thriller that still manages to pull its weight, Death Wish is recommended only to people who want to see Charles Bronson gun down street thugs for 100 minutes, for aside from that it doesn't have much to offer.

It's a shame Charles Bronson didn't have the budget, writing, casting, and production resources that Stephen Segal, Schwartzenegger, and other great action film guys had. He was great in big budget films when he had first-rate directors and casting like "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Great Escape". But as much as I wanted to like Bronson in his own "kill the bad guys" films, they are nothing more than poor imitations of the multitude of cheap TV shows from the 1970's produced by Stephen J. Cannell. I paid the price to discover the truth. You shouldn't if you're smart...

Ifound this movie under my parents bed last night, and I watched it because I read the plot and it sounded pretty good because it reminded me of my favorite game, Max Payne. The movie was alright, but I wanted Paul to find his wife's killers. I guess that is what the sequel is for. I also thought it ended too soon. If you like vigilante films, you'll love DEATH WISH!!!!!

Charles Bronson plays the role of the original vigilante, Mr. Paul Kearsey. There are many films of the 70's that tried in vain to have depth, but the social commentary that Death Wish delivers in urban violence is very thought provoking. The movie delivers in thrills and drama while Mr. Kearsey attempts to settle a score against the scum of the streets. Viewing this film only makes me realize how mush I miss Charles Bronson and how wonderful of an actor he was.
