Editorial Review:
Album Description: While Sire's U.S. collection 'The Singles' concisely represents the best from 1980-87 by Chrissie Hynde & co., this import-only retrospective is sure to be treasured by fans as it contains most of that discs cuts (13 of the 16), plus all of the group's best ever since, (including gems like 'I'll Stand By You', 'Night In My Veins' and 'Human' (Tin Tin Out Remix), PLUS Chrissie Hynde's smash collaboration 'Spiritual High (State Of Independence)' with Moodswings! Listeners are treated to a total of 20 classics from The Pretenders 20 year career with this set, which also includes favorites like 'Back On The Chain Gang', 'Don't Get Me Wrong', 'Brass In Pocket' and 'Middle Of The Road'.2000 release. Standard jewel case.

Eldest daughter couldn't locate this CD and requested I check Amazon. Sure enough, Amazon had it available and in a few days the disc was in her hands and a smile was upon her face. I listened and found the group's music really good. Used a couple tunes in a family photo DVD slide show. Is there anything Amazon doesn't have?

This CD from The Pretenders is a step up from The Singles in that it moves from the albums after Get Close and up to Viva el Amor!. You get a bonus cut in "State Of Independence" (not necessarily a plus) and better sound. Nineteen songs in all, from the cool fire of "Brass In Pocket" to their best rocker, "Middle of The Road," the actual bonuses are "Human" (a remix from the "Viva" CD and a shoulda-been hit) and "I'll Stand By You" from Last of the Independents.
What the set should have done was add a cut from Packed!, like the underrated "Sense of Purpose." Or maybe an alternate live song or two from The Isle of View. It would be nice for maybe Rhino to get this out domestically, too. But given the disc at hand, this is the best single CD collection of The Pretenders available. Also of note: The Pretenders - Greatest Hits DVD.

This is actually a good Pretenders compilation, my one complaint would be that they didn't include "My City Was Gone", that seems like a necessary track. That aside, this compilation gathers together most of the hits and a few rarities, as well. Probably best for casual fans, or if you are just getting into The Pretenders, it's a good start.

After hearing a radio show on the Pretenders I realized the huge hole in my music library caused by having no album from this prolific band. I signed in to Amazon and spent much of the evening listening to samples and reading reviews of each album. I ordered this album even though many music snobs stated that doing so is selling out to the punk roots of the Pretenders; I respectfully disagree. What this album does is serve as an exemplar of the many stages that this great band has gone through during their long and fruitful career. It creates a complete picture better than most one album sets and is cheaper than buying six different albums. For most people this is the best value and thus the best buy from the Pretenders.

I really don't listen to a lot of my favorite bands from the '80s so much nowadays but one of the few bands from my adolescent that I still listen to is The Pretenders. Their music is a melodic mix of pop and punk. Chrissie Hyndes still sounds as good now as she did when I first heard her as a child. I personally think the band's GREATEST HITS cd is very good even if they didn't include one of my favorite songs "Revolution". I definitely think that GREATEST HITS is vastly superior over the band's singles compilation due to production and that the collection includes some of their more recent material from the '90s. My personal favorite Pretenders song will always be the beautiful ballad "Hymn to Her". That song always moves me. Love the pop hooks. I initially never cared much for "Brass in Pocket" (which I have heard that it is Chrissie Hynde's least favorite song) but as I get older, the song has really grown on me. I love the opening line and the beat. The only two songs I don't particularly care for on the compilation is the duets with UB40. I never liked UB40 to begin with. The songs were rubbish to me. Overall great compilation by one of my favorite bands of my childhood.
