Editorial Review:
Description: Get ready for the wildest adventure of a lifetime in the most ambitious musical production ever brought to film. Earning a 1967 Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, this dazzling fantasy turns both ordinary and exotic animals into talking, dancing and singing sensations! Rex Harrison is unforgettable in this inspiring adaptation of Hugh Lofting's classic stories. Step into the English country home of the good doctor as he performs remarkable treatments on the wildest variety of patients you could imagine. Discover his secret cures and watch with wide-eyed excitement as he and his four-legged, fine-feathered friends charm their way into your heart!
Amazon.com: So, they let both Rex Harrison and Anthony Newley sing. This 1968 family musical is classier than the 1998 Eddie Murphy remake, with all of its scatological humor. This won a couple of Oscars (Best Song, Best Effects) and was nominated for seven more, including Best Picture. At the time of release, however, this was a box-office dud. Based (in part) on the magical Hugh Lofting book, it begins in Puddleby-by-the-Marsh, England, from which the world-renowned veterinarian Dolittle (Harrison) begins his quest for a giant pink sea snail. Children should find this enjoyable for its exotic creatures, such as the Pushme-Pullyou. Most adults may not agree as readily, although some of us consider this a guilty pleasure. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Delightful for kids and surprisingly funny and touching for adults. The story, script, and acting performances are totally charming and the whole movie is very whimsical, a visual treat, and a bit surreal. Beautiful soundtrack! I had never realized these songs were from this movie. I recently rented the DVD for my 6 year old, because I could remember how much we loved it as kids in the sixties/seventies. I have to say, watching it as an adult, I was amazed how good it was. There was a lot more to it than I had remembered as a child. You simply don't find movies like this anymore, and children deserve movies this good. This movie speaks to the heart and mind in a gentle, funny, uplifting and intelligent way. It doesn't patronize kids with crude, stupid, or aggressive humor. It was so refreshing. "The world is full of wonderful things", and this movie is definitely one of them. That's why I'm getting DVDs of it for us and our nieces and nephews, and the soundtrack CD. The songs from this movie make great bedtime lullabies. The movie has really great 1960's retro-victorian style, too.

Purchased this movie as a collector's item since part of the movie was filmed at Marigot Bay, Saint Lucia. I have added it to my collection of movies filmed in Saint Lucia.

I loved this movie when I was a kid and now my kids get to fall in love with it too. It is a classic!!

Another fine performance by Rex Harrison. If you loved him in My Fair Lady, you'll also love him as the socially awkward (at least among humans) animal doctor.

I really do. It's simple, easy to watch, and younger kids seem to love it. It's just an entertaining film without over-the-top, in your face effects. Best for kids or adults in a mellow mood I would think. It works for me.
