Editorial Review:
Album Description: Import pressing of their two-disc, 16-track collection. Universal.
Amazon.com: While not as comprehensive as their self-titled box set, this greatest-hits collection is an excellent introduction to the definitive Southern-rock band. If you've always wondered why people holler "Free Bird!" at bar bands, this album will show you, along with serving up several of Lynyrd Skynyrd's best songs: "Saturday Night Special," "What's Your Name," "Tuesday's Gone," and of course "Sweet Home Alabama." Some lesser-known but equally great songs are here as well: "Gimme Three Steps," "Whiskey Rock-a-Roller," and "That Smell." While some good material (notably "Needle and the Spoon" and "Working for MCA") is missing, this remains an excellent collection, highlighting the quality of the band's material, which is too often overshadowed by their good ol' boy image. --Genevieve Williams

I'm not sure why this album is a double-disc (probably because of the 14-minute version of Free Bird), but it only has eight tracks on each disc. Given the basic premise (a collection of their most successful releases), the album is solid. However, several of their better, less-known songs like "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe" are excluded. The highlight of the album is "Simple Man," which I consider to be their best song.
If you're looking for the best Lynyrd Skynyrd greatest hits album (from among the dozens that have been released over the years), keep looking. But if you just want a solid collection of some of their most famous work, this album does the job.

All they wanted to be was the Allman Brothers Band. Oh my did they ever overachieve. If you have any doubt about the greatness of this band just play this CD.
They were underappreciated and probably still are. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are you listening? Ronnie is one of the all time best and we won't see his like anytime soon.
There is not a bad track and I will go out on a limb and say that Sweet Home Alabama is the weakest song on the CD.

These songs are pretty good, but just remember that a song doesnt have to go gold or platinum for it to be a classic.

I have looked at other collections, and this one truly has all their best stuff. I know most people probably won't buy this set, but I urge you to check it out if you happen to decide to. Skynyrd has some great songs, and they brought a different perspective to rock music that was quite absent before their arrival (the perspective of patriots). I think its all awesome stuff, with killer 3 piece guitar and the whole works. This collection is boosted by the several live tracks, including "free bird" live, and though the studio version of this song rules, the live version is extremely good too. Anyways, give this collection a listen and see what the fuss is about.

Lynyrd Skynyrd are primarily remembered for two songs - Sweet home Alabama and Free bird - but there is so much more of their music that is worth listening to.
Sweet home Alabama is an ode to the pleasures of living in Alabama, whatever Neil Young might think - the Canadian rock icon (whose music I also enjoy) had recorded a couple of songs, one titled Southern man and the other titled Alabama, which offended them. Despite the reference to Neil Young and another controversial reference to Alabama's then-governor (George Wallace), this song is essentially a joyous, fun song and should be taken as such. I've never been to Alabama, but this song makes it sound like paradise. Neil Young's song made it sound anything but.
Free bird has become a classic piece of rock music. Apart from its sheer quality, its length (almost ten minutes) helps its popularity in jukeboxes - you pay the same to play a record whatever its length, so you get your money's worth with Free bird.
There are many other great tracks here, among them I ain't the one, Simple man, Saturday night special and Tuesday's gone.
Lynyrd Skynyrd were among the best southern rock bands of the seventies, perhaps even the best of all. This collection contains all the essentials but the double-CD (Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd) has superior sound quality as well as many more tracks including an incredible cover of Call me the breeze (J J Cale). While this is the best single CD compilation ... Read More
