I stumbled across this little gem (my vinyl copy) cleaning out a cabinet last weekend. Even though I'm a big Buckingham/Nicks fan, "Mystery to Me" will always be my favorite Fleetwood Mac album, yet it pre-dates all the record-breaking records that followed.
The raw creativity is unbelievable, particularly for the early seventies. Ironically, this may explain why it didn't sell more copies. The timing and rhythm of most of the tracks make this collection stand out from other music being released at the same time. In most bands you would attribute the percussion and bass (writers McVie and Fleetwood) for defining and holding the rhythms, but clearly the Bobs (Weston and Welch, on guitar) and Christine Perfect McVie (keyboards) were way out there too. I'd love to know who to credit, but thats probably better left to Fleetwood Mac historians.
Its amazing when you think about what happens when talented but otherwise unknown musicians are grouped with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. First was Peter Green, one of the finest "British Blues" performers of his time ("Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac"), before leaving the band and fading away. Next, (some might disagree) "Mystery to Me" seems to have been the high water mark for Welch and Weston as well, before they left the band. And everyone knows what happened when the unknown duo of Buckingham-Nicks were hired. In a way, the Bobs may take credit for paving the way for (by leaving) one of the greatest pop ... Read More

I really wasn't familiar with early Fleetwood Mac but heard that track "Hypnotized" on a deep tracks radio hour.Had to have it & am still looking for time to hear the rest. I haven't had a chance yet for anything but a quick scan thru but it sounds like I'm really liking the sound of the album tracks overall.

This album has lots of special memories for me. Back in the day when I would, how shall we say, "self-medicate" myself and throw a stack o' wax on the turntable, this was one of the albums that found it's way on the platter more often than not. MYSTERY TO ME has to be the most soothing album Fleetwood Mac ever put out. "Hypnotized" IMO is one of the best Mac songs EVER! Mention also to the opener, "Emerald eyes", "The city", and "Miles away". This album is Bob Welch's shining moment with Fleetwood Mac, with Christine starting to gain more confidence in her writing. A classic pre Stevie and Lindsey Mac album, perfect for a rainy Saturday afternoon or a fall drive. Get it already!

This album is a kind of in - between album, not longer following their roots. Agree, every change in the band results automatically in a different style and different songs. The following album were heroes are hard to find, (the last album with BOB WELCH) and now Lindsey Buckingham & Stevie Nicks joined the band. There first album was called Fleetwood Mac, and sold over 4.500.000 copies, NOT TO CONFUSE with the same titled album inn 1968.
This first album showed the path they left and could be easy compared with RUMOURS.
