Editorial Review:
Product Description: When Redwall was published in 1987 it catipulted author Brian Jacques to international stardom. And small wonder! This enthralling tale is jam-packed with the things we long for in a great adventure: danger, laughter, hairbreath excapes, tragedy, mystery, a touch of wonder, a truly despicable villain, and a hero we can take to heart.
That hero is Matthias, a young mouse who must rise above his fears and failures to save his friends at Redwall Abbey. The villain is Cluny the Scourage, one of the most deliciously despicable rats of all time. The unforgettable cast of supporting characters includes the stalwart badger Constance, an irrepressible hare named Basil Stag Hare, and the elderly wisemouse Brother Methuselah.
But most of all there is Matthias, seeking his true destiny in a journey that will lead through danger and despair to true wisdom.
Amazon.com Review: As the inhabitants of Redwall Abbey bask in the glorious Summer of the Late Rose, all is quiet and peaceful. But things are not as they seem. Cluny the Scourge, the evil one-eyed rat warlord, is hell-bent on destroying the tranquility as he prepares to fight a bloody battle for the ownership of Redwall. This dazzling story in the Redwall series is packed with all the wit, wisdom, humor, and blood-curdling adventure of the other books in the collection, but has the added bonus of taking the reader right back to the heart and soul of Redwall Abbey and the characters who live there.
Magical, mystical, and the stuff of legends, this stunning tale of good battling with--and ultimately triumphing over--evil takes the reader on a roller-coaster adventure that barely draws breath from the first page to the very last. Brian Jacques is a true master of his craft. --Susan Harrison

My mom read this book to me when I was very young... fifteen years ago, or more. I remember being skeptical at first to hear of mice and squirrels who could talk and wear swords and read books, etc. but this passed after a couple chapters.
The Redwall series is really a treasure of fantasy writing for kids of an appropriate age (I'd say 3rd grade for some, but middle school for others), and Jacques is an expert at weaving in poems, songs, riddles, and a refreshing prose into his stories to make the come alive.
I enjoyed these books for years and though I'm a little too stuffy to get into them any more, I'd still encourage parents of young readers to check these out, as they're creative, entertaining, and moderately challenging reads for kids.
One warning -- the books can be somewhat graphic... they're mice, hares, etc. but they still fight and die in the stories just like people in other books... so make sure your kids are mature enough to deal with the notion of 'death' and PG violence.

Man I love this book. But I always find it in the juvenile section. Have these people READ the stuff that happens? There is at least 1 death every 5 pages! Even if it's cute animals doing it, death is death. Good book though. Highly recommended. In my top 10 favorite list.

Redwall has to be one of the most exciting books of all time in what I consider to already be a very exciting series. Though I suppose many people are familiar with the traditional story book talking animal characters, Jacques takes the genre a step further to create a fantastical world of cutesy talking animals... that totally kick butt, to put it graphically. Redwall is a community that strives for peace, and yet it is also a community that will always defend itself and the week. Jacques makes every character a true individual, and his quick-but-vivid storytelling makes the book a rush to read.

Redwall is a great story about animals trying to defend themselves from the evil ones, but I would be careful who I recommend it to. I enjoyed most of it, with the exception of some of the rough scenes wherein someone dies or is tortured. The author doesn't make a great deal of it, yet they are descriptive and perhaps too much for younger readers, or listeners... an adult can handle it fine.
