Editorial Review:
Product Description: The Story of the World CD audiobook is a collaboration between Jim Weiss, whose voice is "liquid gold" (CNN TV), and Susan Wise Bauer, whose writing has been described as "timeless and intelligent" (Publishers Weekly). These spirited readings of the first volume in Bauer's history series bring to life the stories and records of human history from ancient times to the present.
Written in an engaging, straightforward manner, this volume of the popular Story of the World series weaves world history into a storybook format. The first volume begins with the ancient nomads and ends with the last Roman emperor.
This audio CD edition may be used along with the print books, as a supplement to a traditional history curriculum, or independently. 6 audio CDs.

My 11 year old son likes to fall asleep listening to a story and these CD's teach him some history at the same time. He likes them a lot.

I bought these cd's as a way to review the ancient history we are studying in our homeschool. I put them in our car and played the first one for our son during a trip to town. Now whenever we are in the car he begs to listen to them, if I put the radio on he asks "Can't we please just listen to the history of the world cd!" He's 8 by the way, and it is really helping him remember things we have read. A new chapter will begin and he will start telling me things he remembers from when we read about it earlier this year. And Jim Weiss has a great reading voice, very easy to listen to. I will definately be getting volume 2 and future editions.

Almost every night, I put in the next CD and my son LOVES these CD's. He has put history-related items on his Christmas Wish List, because he is enjoying the CD's so much. And even more significantly, he mentions from time to time things that I know have come from these stories.
The narrator is excellent, and the text from which he reads is appropriate for all age levels, and especially for (I'd say) four to nine year old children. The text is written in an interesting manner that is quite engaging, and for the most part follows a chronological order.

When I listened to the first chapter of this cd with my son, I was worried that it would be too boring for him. I was delighted to find that he loved it and listened to one cd a night for seven nights. He even went to be early so that he could have time to listen to an entire cd. They are all slightly over an hour long. He finished the last cd today while cleaning up his room and kept running out to tell me things like "E Pluribus Unum" (sp?) means "one from many" and different factoids about the Roman Empire.
We are not a religious family, but I found none of the Christian elements to be offensive at all. It is harder to distinguish the included bible stories (of which there area couple) from the historical stories than it is in the written book because there is no indication - in the book, these are outlines with a darker line. If this is a problem for you, I recommend getting the book to go along with the cd and then pay attention to the chapters so that it can be a point of discussion.
I found this series on CD to provide us with an opportunity for something that Mortimer Adler (a great reader of classic works) recommends - he says that the first time you read something challenging, you should go straight through without stopping to analyze so that you get the whole "story" of the work. Only after that should you go back and re-read more critically, taking the time to look things up and understand it on a deeper level. I think that these ... Read More

When I first started listening to this series, I found the text engaging, and so did my 7-year old child. I was outraged and dismayed when a discussion of ancient Egypt was followed by a Bible story about Abraham. This story was not prefaced in any way with a reminder that it comes from the Bible. It was presented in the same way as the discussion about Egypt, as though it were fact, which leads me to wonder what other non-factual accounts will be presented on these CDs as fact (I have not finished listening to all the CDs in the set) and to question the author's intentions (is this a Christian rewrite of history?). I was particularly incensed that nowhere in the description of the product was it indicated that there is a definite Christian slant to the material. I would never have bought it if I had known.
Teaching Bible stories is fine -- but not on a history CD! Belatedly, I read the 1-star reviews of the book on which these CDs are based, and discovered that the historical facts in the book (and hence on the CDs) are furthermore inaccurate and often laced with the author's poorly-informed opinions.
