This is a very well written short story. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm sure it is probably good as well.

If I know a movie version of a book is coming out, I tend to read the book long before I see it, especially when it's written by a legendary author such as F. Scott Fitzgerald (but in this case, they turn an 25 page short story into a 2 plus hour epic film). I grabbed my Fitzgerald Short Stories book and read through Benjamin Button in just a half hour and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a quirky, distinctive little tale that follows the life of Benjamin as he ages in reverse. I highly recommend this story to anyone, especially those who have read the more recent novel, The Confessions of Max Tivoli by Andrew Sean Greer.

I was dissapointed with this book, actually it should be called a phamplet. Its so short I could hardly believe they would publish something so short. I really wanted to read the book before seeing the movie but I did not expect the book that came to be only 32 pages, of which 10 of them is sinopsis and dedication.

This book has probably received a lot more attention as of late because of the movie, which was also what made me interested in the book. It's a story about a man named Benjamin Button who ages backwards instead of forwards. He begins life as an old man, and gradually gets younger throughout the years.
Although I was so fascinated by the idea of this story, I must admit I was a little disappointed. I felt that there could've been a lot more that F. Scott Fitzgerald could've done with this story. It was all just too typical.
For one thing, they never really explained how or why Benjamin Button is born as an old man. Benjamin doesn't seem to do anything extraordinary with his life. The whole story seems rather pointless. So he ages backwards. Why does he age backwards? I kept waiting for something great to happen that never did.

I was tremendously disappointed with F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I have not seen the movie yet, but had seen previews and was well, curious about the source of the film.
The funny thing in the author's notes, he states an anonymous 'admirer' who wrote in response to a review posted in a magazine, how terrible the story was - in fact, he hated to waste a sheet of paper to complain about the book! Fitzgerald added this because many words were misspelled, inferring the person obviously 'didn't get it'.
Well thank goodness for the computer, because I can add my 2 cents in.
It is pretty well known the story is about a man born as an old man, and as he 'ages', his appearance gets younger. Interesting premise.
But, Fitzgerald never talks of Benjamin's mother: her feelings - what does she think? Surely they did a Caesarian because otherwise it would have really hurt...
In truth, Benjamin never was accepted as himself, only in spurts in time where he was 'the right age' - to join the military, to marry a woman who wanted an older man. Even his son had little love for him.
Fitzgerald never delves deeply into the emotions, the characters.
One hopes the person who adapted this story to screenplay made some major magic, and greated a three dimensional person who was created and lived his life differently from every other human.
