I graduated in the bottom third of my class from a third tier law school while working part time and already have a masters in another field. I've been applying for five to six jobs for a year and heard absolutely nothing.
I bought this book, read the pertinent parts, and applied her ideas to my cover letters and rewrote my resume to reflect continuing education and experiences establishing my solo firm. I have gotten an interview and a letter of interest from an impressive, large health-care system whose words were "your qualifications meet our specifications and we want to talk with you and proceed with the hiring process."
This is a wretched time to get hired and I've gotten more interest than ever. I credit this book. It helped me get creative and it helped me stop listening to this steady, deadly drone of a communication from the law-culture that the only job worth having is a big firm associate job. Those jobs are not open to me and I feel very bitter and disturbed if I believe that those are the only jobs worth having.
I say buy the book! How much money have we wasted on these law degrees? Throw a little more into a possible solution.

So, the economy sucks right now and there are way too many lawyers in this country. So this isn't the time to be making stupid mistakes in cover letters, resumes, and interviews. I have been looking for a job for several months now, although not aggressively. After reading this book I realized how many mistakes I made while looking for a job in my first year of law school. I know I could have done better if I had read this book at least two years ago. I now treat it basically as a checklist of the most important things to do during a job search. I refer to it often, such as the night before an interview, so as to refresh myself on how to prepare.

This should be that book. Kimm lays out, in straightforward language, exactly what you need to do in order to get the best job for you. I go to a top 30 school and, because of Kimm, I am competing with students from top 10 schools.
You might hear on a law school discussion message board, or be told by your LSAT prep teacher, that you shouldn't read (or read very little) before law school. They are wrong, and if you read this book you will see how much of an advantage you have over people who don't use this book. It is easy to feel guilty with so much powerful knowledge at your fingertips, so try not to keep this book too much of a secret.
If you go to a tier 3 or 4 school: I'm willing to bet that if you read this book and follow its advice that it will open the door to jobs that are usually only available to tier one students.
This book is the best $30 I've ever spent. For just $30 dollars I have offers from firms that pay $2000 a week! Now that's a rate of return I can live with!
Thank you, Kimm!

This is a must have for any law student. I don't care if you are the first in your class at Harvard, or the bottom of your class in Thomas Jefferson. You need this one.

I wish I read this book in my 1L year or even before law school. It is the most serious book out there for getting the legal job of your "dreams" which is not necessarily the job that pays the most. Some of you will stop reading this review at this point because you feel that the two are synonymous. If you are absolutely sure of that, don't read the book or the rest of this review. Also, go get an MBA because they make way more money, especially per hour worked, than lawyers. But, if you are like me and want more out of your legal career than money, definitely read this book. Believe me, I'm not suggesting that money isn't important. It is. But for most people, money is only one component of happiness.
Since all of you reading this are probably law students, I will tell you that I'm a 3L at UC Davis Law School with some experience to share. The book is a collection of chapters that often repeat themselves. The author explains in the introduction that it is not to be read cover to cover. Read the book section by section according to your needs. For the purposes of this review, I will explain my situation and how the book helped me going forward and how it could have helped me had I read it earlier.
I transferred to UC Davis because I never made it off the waitlist initially. But I worked my butt off first year and made top 10%. That got got me into Davis as a transfer student and I got swept up in OCI fever. I came to law school from ... Read More
